Wheels on Fire: Rush for bikes boosts Halfords
Halfords has recorded one of its best Christmas trading performances for several years thanks to extremely strong bicycle sales.
The company which has been struggling for years due to its under-invested stores and poor customer service record, managed to see sales jump 5.9% in its stores on a like-for-like basis in the 15 weeks to January 10 compared with a year earlier.
Bikes designed by Olympian Victoria Pendleton, pictured, sold particularly well, up 137%, while the new Boardman range, which was designed by Chris Boardman, doubled in sales.
The City reacted positively to the results, with shares up 6.9% to 492.8p, hitting a three-year high.
